Life on the Outs

Old wharf and tidal flats at Dyea

Yakutania Point at low tide
As always, my favorite time of the day is after work when I get to play outside.  After yoga I either walk my favorite rescue dog, Keta,  up into the woods around Lower Dewey Lake or go out to Yakutania Point to smell the sea breeze and look for seals, river otters and possible whales.  Alternately I bike up toward White Pass or out the dirt road to Dyea.  Since I talk with so many people at the bookstore each day,  I relish the time alone and the quiet.

In May I walked the first eight miles of the Chilkoot Trail as part of the Parks Service Interpreter training.  I am so lucky to have Cindy Von Halle as my supervisor because she includes me in everything and has introduced me to half of Skagway.

As I mentioned  on Facebook, Sam and I have seen lots of wildlife on the Klondike Highway which is the road to Whitehorse.  I've only done one backpack alone but I had my Keta, my rescue dog with me, and didn't see any wildlife other than an immature eagle who was curious about us.

Yesterday we took advantage of the rate for locals and did a whale watch boat tour.  They give you your money back if you don't see a whale.  We saw whales, sea lions, glaciers, eagles and fantastic waterfalls.

Humpback, gee, it's hard to get a good photo

Today I walked the local breast cancer walkathon from Dyea to Skagway.  Each mile one of the local businesses had a water/treat station.  The Red Onion Saloon handed out free margaritas.  Only in Alaska!  Did I mention folks drink a lot here and from my observations smoke more dope per capita than Outside?  Between learning how to swear from my room mate and now hiking with a drink in hand,  I am slowly being transformed.
